In some forms of this disease, the heart and other organs are also affected. Currently there is no cure for any form of muscular dystrophy. Some modern medicines, ayurvedic remedies and therapies can slow the course of the disease. This article introduces with a main thrust complementary program of care through research on Muscular dystrophy with a focus on Ayurvedi

By: Ayush Muscular Dystrphy Society

Muscular dystrophies are a group of more than 20 different genetic neuromuscular disorders, some more debilitating than others. The most common, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) affects 1 in 3500 boys. There is a problem in the chromosome that codes for a protein called dystrophin which maintains the integrity of the muscle cell wall. Eventually irreversible destruction of the muscle cells occurs. In early school years, it may just seem that DMD boys are slower and clumsier than their peers. The disease progresses such that the majority will be wheelchair bound by 10-14 years.

Muscular dystrophies are inherited. Each disease is transmitted by a different genetic trait. DMD is inherited in an X-linked recessive transmission. That means that females may be carriers but do not have any debilitating symptoms. A female carrier has a 50% chance of transmitting the faulty gene onto her children. There is no satisfactory treatment in any system of medicine. It is a progressive muscle-wasting disease due to a mutation in the dystrophin gene and the consequential protein deficiency in muscle. It results in chronic inflammation and severe skeletal muscle degeneration. How the lack of the sarcolemma protein dystrophin gives rise to the final disease status is still not clear.

The genetic disease conditions are diagnosed through genetic testing, a physical exam, a family medical history, and some specific tests. These might include: A muscle biopsy (the removal and examination of a small sample of muscle tissue)

DNA (genetic) testing Electromyography or nerve conduction tests (which use electrodes to test muscle and/or nerve function) Blood enzyme tests (which may reveal muscle damage)

For DMD and BMD, muscle biopsy may show whether dystrophin protein is missing or abnormal, and DNA Test is used to analyze the condition of the related gene.

There’s no definite cure and, although a great deal can be done to help limit the effects of Muscular dystrophies. Ayurveda considers this condition as Mamsa-vata-kshaya related to beeja dosha and impairments of Mamsagni (muscle enzyme). It involves deranged Vata and subsequent degeneration of muscles and structures related to it. Ayurveda consider this condition due to leakage of Mamsagni from muscle tissues. This is supposed due to sarcolemma membrane defect in the muscle fibers. Ayurvedic treatment might slow or stop the progression of muscle degeneration. The Til Mash Pinda swedana can help to stabilize the membrane defect. The Mamsagni Rasayana show cellular protective influence due to Vata deregulations. Existing Panch Karma and other supportive treatments aim to control symptoms, such as muscle spasm, and enable people to have a good quality of life. They include gentle Pawan Muktasana series of muscle exercises, because inactivity can worsen the disease. Pawan Muktasana along with certain other Asanas such as Bhujangasana may prevent or delay scoliosis, or curvature of the spine. The Bhastrika Pranayama may support Cardio- Respiratory system and may improve process of beta-oxidation at cellular level. Yogic support of Bhastrika Pranayama is important to boost the respiratory function. When respiratory function deteriorates, ventilator support may be needed.

There is no cure for any form of muscular dystrophy some medicines, ayurvedic remedies and therapies can slow the course of the disease. Human trials of gene therapy with the dystrophin gene are on the near horizon. For instance, scientists are researching ways to insert a working dystrophin gene into the muscles of boys with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies. Panch Karma procedures are also found useful in the life term management of muscular dystrophy.

Ayurvedic researchers are investigating the potential of certain muscle-building Rasayana medicines to slow down or reverse the progression of muscular dystrophy. Other trials are looking into the effects of the dietary supplements Withania somnifera, Curcuma longa, Creatine and glutamine on muscle energy production and storage.

Symptoms of muscular dystrophy often can be relieved through exercise, Panch Karma therapy, rehabilitative devices, and Yogic respiratory care with Bhastrika Pranayama, and surgery.

Ayurvedic Panch Karma & Yogic Support can minimize abnormal or painful positioning of the joints and may prevent or delay curvature of the spine. Respiratory care, deep breathing, and coughing exercises are often recommended. In Duchenne muscular dystrophy, corticosteroids may slow muscle destruction. In myotonic muscular dystrophy, phenytoin, procainamide or quinine can treat delayed muscle relaxation. In DMD, BMD and LGMD, the Mamsagni Rasayana has shown muscular protection.

Genetic counseling, prenatal diagnosis by chorionic villus sampling, and antenatal screening of families with MDs provides an opportunity to prevent these diseases being passed on to children. Ayurvedic primary intention is on treating or delaying symptoms, enhancing physical mobility and preventing cardiac and respiratory complications. If you are serious about eliminating anxiety from your life for good, naturopathy or naturopathic medicine is a safe and effective way to begin the healing process now!

By: Dennis Manz

Naturopathy or naturopathic medicine consists of a system or method that employs no surgery or synthetic drugs. Naturopathic medicine includes such therapies as special diets, herbs, vitamins, massage, etc., to assist the natural healing process. Naturopathy, under the skillful and watchful care of a naturopathic physician, is all you may need for coping with anxiety.

Just follow the three tips in this article and you can overcome the unwanted anxiety in your life. You do not have to suffer anymore.

Tip #1 is Commitment: Make a commitment to yourself to pursue an alternative approach to drugs for coping with anxiety through naturopathic medicine. Make your commitment today to eliminate anxiety from your life for good.

If you truly commit to stopping the symptoms of anxiety panic attack, without any excuses, without the use of drugs, and with the guidance of a naturopathic physician, you will find yourself on a laser focused journey to healing. You do not have to live with the fear of anxiety panic attack anymore. Naturopathy is not new and has been successfully used throughout the world for centuries.

Tip #2 is to find a naturopathic physician licensed, trained and qualified to treat you.

It is absolutely essential that you find a naturopathic physician that you like and feel comfortable with and that is licensed to treat patients, just like an MD. A licensed naturopathic physician (N.D.) attends a four-year graduate level naturopathic medical school after completing a minimum of 3 years undergraduate pre-medical studies. A naturopathic physician is educated in all of the same basic sciences as a traditional allopathic medical doctor but also studies holistic and nontoxic approaches to therapy with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and optimizing wellness. Dr Veronica Hayduk says that it is important to distinguish licensed naturopathic physicians from non-licensed practitioners who have completed only short-term course work, mostly by correspondence. A naturopathic physician will humanly diagnose and treat your condition with dead on accuracy and safety. Naturopathic medicine for coping with anxiety will ensure maximum results for your healing without the serious side effects and addictions associated with anxiety drugs. You can start the ball rolling by getting your questions answered or finding a naturopathic physician for consultation using the following resources www.naturopathic.org or www.findnd.com .

Tip #3 is to persevere and be patient with your prescribed treatment and your naturopathic physician.

It is critical to persevere and be patient with the treatment you receive from your naturopathic physician. Naturopathy is far from being new. Natural medicine dates back thousands of years. You can be confident that a correct diagnosis and accurate treatment will be prescribed for your unique situation and condition. Naturopathic medicine is used very effectively to treat many illnesses and disorders including anxiety. You must have faith and confidence that you are receiving the best natural health remedies to treat your anxiety and that you will heal. Getting lazy, having doubts, or not following through with what is being recommended is just not an option for you since you have come this far. Follow through, be patient, persevere and have faith in the professional you have chosen to treat you. You will be very pleased and amazed at the results you will greatly benefit from.

If you are suffering from frequent anxiety panic attack symptoms, are not happy with the treatment you are currently receiving, or maybe you suspect you might have the symptoms of anxiety, but are not sure what to do about it, just follow these three steps. You will be on your way to coping with anxiety and eliminating those unwanted anxiety attack episodes for good.

Everybody has some or the other stress at a given time. If you say that you are a stress-free individual, totally stress-free, you are not a human being. You are divine in that case.

Well, you can feel stress in many ways. You are stressed when you say the God has erred in one particular aspect. You are stressed when you say 24 hours in a day are too little to cope with your duties and responsibilities. You are stressed when you feel you have so many things to do, in so little a time!

In the day to day activities, you may first experience stress. When stress heightens up, it is anxiety and the final stage is panic attack.

Basically it is a friction of confusion over your priorities. In such situations, you take wrong decisions which further add to your stress and anxiety to ultimately lead you to panic.

Your tensions and worries attack your will power and gain the upper hand. You are in search of solutions, to find the normal position. Now, how to recoup the original poise? Anything done in stress, anxiety and panic is not going to give you permanent solution.

Not knowing what to do, and with the intention of seeking immediate solutions, you take recourse to anti-depressants and other medications. As a result the stress and tension retreat for a while but only to attack you with renewed vigor. You again turn to over the counter medications to gradually become addictive to them. But your stress and anxiety are in their original position.

Panic and stress is a personal subject, highly individualistic and therefore a general medical practitioner will not be able to solve the problem to your satisfaction. And most of these anti-depressant drugs are known to have side-effects, some of them quite serious. Thus soon the remedy becomes worst than the disease.

It is easy for your doctor to make you entirely dependent on drugs, but he should not do that and you should not fall into the drug-trap. Latest researches have proved that if drugs are used in combination with psychotherapy the results would be more beneficial. The more you go to the root cause of your stress and deal with the points of stress one by one, the more beneficial it would be for you.

You need to aim at a permanent solution and not at a temporary patchwork!

Natural methods, yoga, breathing exercises and yoga are the only permanent solutions to stress and anxiety. Panic can never attack a controlled and composed personality.

Bangalore (now Bengaluru) – is the capital of Karnataka. Bangalore is credited with being the IT hub of the country and is also said to be one of the most happening cities of India. Bangalore has a pleasant climate throughout the year and hence is highly visited. Bangalore is inlaid with beautiful gardens and parks and thus is called the Garden City of India. Especially popular in Bangalore is the Cubbon Park, which is known for its tall trees and beautifully maintained bushes. The Bannerghatta National Park in Bangalore is one of the richest zoological reserves in the country and houses a number of animals, including elephants, tigers and deer.

Bangalore is also known for its architectural splendor and several buildings and monuments reinstate the fact. The Vidhan Soudha or the State Legislature of Karnataka is finely built in Dravidian-style and set amidst landscaped gardens. The Vikasa Soudha, adjacent to it houses government buildings. The Bangalore Palace is yet another striking building, resembling the Windsor Castle of England. Tipu Sultan’s Palace in Bangalore is a two-storeyed ornate wooden structure, known for its exquisite arches and ceilings with attractive floral patterns.

The oldest church in Bangalore is the St. Mary’s Basilica, noted for its Gothic-style architecture and stained-glass windows. Another noted church in Bangalore is the Church of Infant Jesus, which is especially crowded on Thursdays. The ISKCON Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna is worth visiting when in Bangalore and is a rather modern structure. The Bull Temple is the highlight of Bangalore and is famed for the massive image of the Bull, which has been carved out from a single piece of stone.

One of India’s largest amusement parks, Wonder La Amusement Park is located in Bangalore. It has a number of water and ground rides, rain dance floor, fire crackers and laser lights at night and good eating joints and is particularly popular with families and children.

Bangalore offers a range of shopping options to the tourist and you’d mostly find big malls here. Forum Mall was the first of its kind in Bangalore and remains a favorite with the youth. The Garuda Mall is the largest Mall in South India and houses a number of branded stores and eating joints. Bombay Central is another popular Mall located in the heart of Bangalore.

Bangalore’s location and importance makes it a popular business centre and hence a large number of hotels are available in Bangalore. Suiting every need and requirement, the hotels in Bangalore offer the best of amenities. More prominent in Bangalore are the serviced apartments that are extremely comfortable and are fully furnished. Whether you look for a budget hotel in Bangalore or a fine star-category, you would always have a vast option to choose from. Bangalore is a melting-pot of various cultures and is truly an interesting holiday spot.

Yoga, the ancient practice of postures, breathing and meditation, is gaining rising popularity of yoga nowadays. Exercising yoga has many psychological and spiritual effects.

Some measure the soaring popularity of yoga by the skyrocketing sales of yoga books, classes and equipment. Others note that yoga classes are overtaking traditional aerobics classes in popularity in health clubs throughout the nation. Yoga has grown in popularity likely because people have realized the benefit of low-impact activities and the need to keep an active lifestyle.

Yoga strives to increase self-awareness on both a physical and psychological level. When you achieve the yogic spirit, you can begin knowing yourself at peace.

Yoga helps you to move better and feel better. It stretches muscles and joints and can result in improved posture, energy levels and overall health. The regular practice of yoga can promote body wellness by gradually increasing overall flexibility. By easing muscles and joints into various postures, tension is released and the body becomes less rigid. The key to gaining real benefit from yoga is consistency of practice and maintaining just the right level of difficulty.

By: viktor vijay Kumar

FRAGRANCE OF AUTUMN

A very long time back I lived and painted on an old boat anchored on Danube near Black sea in Romania. It was autumn and the landscape was a passionate rust, crimson and yellow ochre. It was magical to say the least. I was in communion with the landscape. At other times I would breathe in the autumn landscapes of Europe in Finland, Tatra Mountains in Slovakia and Poland, Styria in Austria, Alpine Piedmonte in Italy, France, and Hungry.

The senses are seduced by the proliferating warm colours as the leaves turn from cool green to life red, rust, brick, yellow-ochre, brown colours. Something happens to soul, it starts to sing, is inundates by a dazzling warmth and pleasantness. Autumn used as a metaphor run to life as well as death. Poets often use the negative metaphor but for visual artists autumn is the great celebration of the festival of colours of joy. By a quirky association I relate the red beard of Vincent Van Gogh in his famous self portrait (1887) to the red of autumn.

But is not the autumn the surfeit of rejuvenation. Do we not talk of the birth death rebirth cycle? Is the Resurrection of Jesus not an emblem of continuity of life and hope? So why be afraid of death? Paul Laurence Dunbar looks at autumn as a celebration and reason of joy—

The earth is just so full of fun

It really can’t contain it;

And streams of mirth so freely run

The heavens seem to rain it.

Don’t talk to me of solemn days

In autumn’s time of splendor,

Because the sun shows fewer rays,

And these grow slant and slender.

The three artist exhibiting together –Baljit chadha Manoj Mantra and Victor Vijay Kumar have titled the exhibition ‘Fragrance of Autumn.’ Baljit has a canny subterranean sense of poetic evocation in his works. He never walks the path familiar. Like a Nature poet he triggers your imagination and you are alone—all by yourself to explore the possible worlds that inhabit his expression. He explores the spiritual in Nature and extends our ‘seeing’ beyond the routine. The artist is provoked, enamoured and literally obsessed with Nature. What better way then to paint the passion of sweet autumn. He brings an expression that borders on surrealistic interpretation of Nature. His works are in the lineage of abstract and nature synthesis, mystical paintings by American artist Georgia O’Keeffe. She was greatly influenced by nature. To quote “Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not.” Baljit mixes virgin joy of nature with a personal monologue. He extends the visual vocabulary of familiar flora by a personal element of imagination. Some of the flowers or vegetation evolves from his inner botanical garden.

Victor Vijay uses a style involving the splashing of colours with brush on the painting surface. The intensity, the thrust, the direction, the height of brush from canvas, the thin/thickness of paint and emotive mood are some of his tools in his art. He also prepares the ground with thin colour washes of acrylic paint. These thin washes overrun each other and create vary coloured transparency and opacity. This creates a subterranean vary coloured underworld on which his brushes of different length, thickness and width work to develop an overlay more like the overlays of precious stones on gold, silver or platinum jewellery. You can not call Pointillism for he splashes colours; nor can you call it Expressionism for he varies his energetic splashing as a variant of his own moods. It is his personally evolved and cobbled technique of painting.

Victor’s painted world of autumn is a symbolist touch on the great expanse of existence. The autumn in his works acquires shapes different from nature or is metamorphosed as human emblems. Symbols like dots, curls, circles, spirals acquire a different dimension in the grand opera of his autumnal landscapes. For him all beauty emerges from the inane and simple, “I create rainbows from the white purity of Infinite”

Manoj Mantra does not paint autumn as such. His art is imaginative, metaphysical and re-creates a form based world into a fantasized universe. Mantra has developed a drawing style with simple naive line where he juxtaposes simple line-enclosed spaces with areas of hatchings. His is the metaphoric use of autumn. His figuration mixes life and decay as the two ends of a single line. At the top of the heap he often uses stylized human figures or some suggestive animal figures or some creatures of indeterminate pedigree. He brings in artefacts of a mechanical-industrial culture. His works are a duel between Nature and industrial landscapes. D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover portrays the joys of Nature and ugliness of crass industrialization. Mantra like Lawrence brings in the joys and warm life-colours of Nature and autumn by the contrivance of subtle, suggestive eroticism.

Mantra’s device of life through eroticism and decay through totemic teeth jutting faces is excellent depiction of autumn. As said earlier autumn and its warm and blood red colours symbolises life and joys as we as vanishing of the existent. Mantra excels in handling both with felicity.

With homeopathy in particular, the origin, or cause, helps the practitioner find the solution. Diet plays an enormous role in your overall health. And how you react to stress shows the way to your cure.

By: Madeleine Innocent

Just because the media doesn’t think favourably about alternative therapies in health and medicine (why would they, they depend enormously on revenue gained from drug advertisements), doesn’t mean to say that they are not hugely successful in the areas they treat.

Take homeopathy. Did you know that homeopathy can heal poisonous snake bites? And cataracts? And cancer?

Well, to be strictly honest, homeopathy doesn’t do the healing. It frees those blockages within you, so that you can heal yourself. It does this by treating you, not the disease you have. This is unique in health and medicine, let alone alternative therapies in health and medicine.

Few people are aware of the enormous scope homeopathy has. It’s kept well hidden by vicious media attacks. This is totally understandable when you realise that homeopathy is low cost. That anyone can do a lot of good using a few common remedies at home, without knowing very much.

This is a huge threat to the lucrative profits of the big pharmaceutical industry.

But does it help you?

Let’s look at a few examples.

A woman was suffering from a cerebral stroke and in a coma. After a month of futile treatments, doctors declared her case as hopeless.

Luckily for her, a homeopath was brought in.

Her unique symptoms before and during the stroke were taken.

She was given a common homeopathic remedy, one which is found in all first aid kits for home prescribing, regularly. Within two days she was moving her eyes, blinking and made efforts to speak. After one week she talking, moving her neck and asking for food. Within one month she walking with support. Shortly after, she recovered of all her mental functions.

Ref Homeopathy 4 Everyone May 2009

Let’s look at another case.

A newly trained hospital doctor was given the job of overseeing the hopeless cases of hepatitis C. With little to do and an open mind, he began searching for something outside the scope of medicine, something perhaps within the scope of alternative therapies in health and medicine.

He discovered that alpha lipoic acid (an antioxidant) was a great healer for toxic livers. After giving his patients this supplement, they all recovered.

Sadly his colleagues couldn’t afford this to come out, as it threatened their careers and their reputations.

Ref Dr. Berskson’s book ‘The Alpha Lipoic Acid Breakthrough’

Yet another case showing how thorough practitioners have to be when using alternative therapies in health and medicine.

A young medical student was taken seriously ill suddenly. She visited doctor after doctor. She was prescribed everything from antibiotics to antidepressants and everything in between. Not one doctor asked her what had changed in her life just prior to becoming sick.

Eventually she worked it out for herself. Since starting at university, her diet had changed from good home cooking to eating hot dogs on the run. Once she eliminated the hot dogs and their sodium nitrate preservative from her diet, she fully regained her health.

Take control of your own health. Look beyond your comfort zone for health care and nutrition. Have an open mind. You’ll be amazed at how healthy you can become.
